I agree in appreciating finally hearing the original Van Zandt version. I visited fredericvanmoe's site and can't believe how excellent his choice of music is.

Robert Plant had no idea who Townes van Zandt was till a couple months before he recorded this song. Townes is America's beautifulest diamond and nobody hardly even knows who he is.

The thing about Van Zandt is that it doesn't matter if it sounds perfect, or if he sang the notes dead on, it was the feelings that he needed to express for himself more than anybody else. Plant gets theatrical and lacks the appropriate emotional undertones, where Townes sounded real about the subject matter. If you really want to hear an amazing cover look for Lucinda Williams' version; good enough for your death bed.
